Deutzia

Deutzia is a genus of about 60 species of shrubs in family Hydrangeaceae, with 50 species occurs in China. It is native to eastern and central Asia( from Himalaya east to Japan and the Philippines), Central America and Europe.

Most Deutzia are deciduous and can grow from 1-4m tall, but a few subtropical species are evergreen. The leaves are opposite, with serrated margin. The flowers of purple, white, or pink are borne in panicles or corymbs and bloom from late spring to early summer. If necessary, prune the plant after flowering in mid summer. Annual pruning will keep the shrub looks tidy, as it can get shaggy and leggy if left untouched. The fruit is a dry capsule containing many small seeds.

Deutzia is an easy shrub to grow. It is commonly grown as ornamental plant and can be grown in borders or trained as wall shrubs. The smaller varieties can be grown in containers or as groundcovers. Plant Deutzia in sun, in fertile and, moisture-retentive soil. Propagation is by seed in autumn; softwood cuttings in summer and hardwood cuttings in autumn. Deutzia is not particularly vulnerable to any pests or diseases.
