Deschampsia (Hair Grass, Tussock Grass)

Deschampsia (Hair Grass, Tussock Grass) is a genus of wild grass in the family Poaceae, comprising about 30-40 species. Deschampsia is a perennial, evergreen grass with elegant inflorescence.

D. flexuosa ( Wavy Hair Grass) is found in dry grassland and on moors and heaths. It has fine, blue-green leaves. The panicles of silver-brown flower heads are formed on wavy stalks and flowers from June to July. It is also one of the grass species on which Wall Brown butterfly lays its eggs.

Deschampsia is easy to grow and grows best in sun, or partial shade in moisture-retentive, neutral to acidic soil. Propagation is by seed in spring or autumn; and by division in spring or early summer.
