Muskmelon (Cucumis melo) is a species of melon in the family Cucurbitaceae, native to Persia(Iran), and Armenia. It has been developed into many varieties of different sizes, shapes and colors. The two main types of fruit are those with smooth skin and the ones with netted skin. The varieties are Cantaloupe, Casaba, Charentais, Crenshaw, Honeydew, and Persian.
Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis) - The name cantaloupe is originally used only to the non-netted orange-fleshed melons of Europe. However the name has since being used to refer to any orange-fleshed melon. The fruit is round- or oval-shaped, and usually has a ribless rind. The weight ranges from 0.5-5 kgs. The flesh is orange-yellow to salmon color, and have a soft and juicy texture with a sweet and musky aroma.
Casaba - The fruit is round or ovoid, and weighs about 2.2 kg. It has wrinkled yellow rind and whitish flesh. The smooth-textured flesh is creamy, juicy, and sweet. It is less fragrant than other melons.
Charentais - The fruit is an elongated, globe-shaped melon. The rind is smooth to slightly netted gray-green, with slight ridges. The firm, deep-orange flesh is sweet.
Crenshaw - This is a hybrid between casaba and cantaloupe, and weighs about 2.7 kg. It has smooth, yellow-green skin, with a pale green or salmon-colored flesh. The fragrant flesh is very sweet and juicy, and softer than any other melons.
Honeydew - It is a round melon with smooth rind that changes from pale green to creamy yellow as it ripens. It weighs about 1.3 kg. The sweet flesh is green, white, orange, or pink-orange.
Persian - The fruit is a large, oval to round melon, with strongly netted, unridged rind. It is similar to a cantaloupe, but larger, weighing 3.1-3.6 kg. The orange-colored flesh has a musky aroma.
Muskmelon is high in Vitamins A, B, C, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and dietary fiber.
