Largebract Indian Breadroot (Pediomelum cuspidatum) Gardening
Largebract Indian Breadroot (Pediomelum cuspidatum syn.Psoralea cuspidata) is a perennial herb in the family Fabaceae, native to the United States. It is also known as Buffalo pea, Indian Turnip, Bread scurf pea, Tall-bread Scurf-pea, and Tall Scurfy pea. Largebract Indian Breadroot can be found growing in North America US Lower 48, specifically in the states of Montana, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Texas.
Largebract Indian Breadroot has a subterranean stem, and a deep, large taproot 4-15 cm long. It has multiple, upright to reclined branches, 18-60 cm long, and long petioled leaves that are palmately divided into 5-7 leaflets, 7.5-10 cm long and 2-4 cm wide, and not hairy. The upright, pea-like flowers are blue or purplish with a sweet clover scent. They are borne in condensed spikes from the leaves, on a 10 cm tall flower stalk. The fruit is an oval pod containing one seed, 4 mm long.
