Introducing Cacti and Succulents

Succulents are water-retaining plants that grow in arid climate and soil conditions. Succulent plants store water in their leaves, stems and roots. As a result, the leaves of succulent plants have a fleshy appearance which itself is known as succulence.

Many succulents come from dry places in the tropics, such as up in very high mountains, on steppes, semi-deserts and deserts. The hot weather and low rainfall force these plants to collect and store water to survive long periods of drought. Below are succulents documented in The Flowering Garden.
