Brassavola Gardening Tips

    Orchids About Tim & Esther

Brassavola is a genus of sympodial orchids. They come from Central America, particularly between Mexico to Panama, as well as the tropical parts of South America such as Venezuela. They are related to other sympodial orchids such as the Cattleya, Laelia and Epidendrum. There are 20 species in total, the majority are epiphytic with a few which are lithophytes. They are characterised by their leaves which are succulent, and grow from an elongated pseudobulb.

Brassavola usually produces greenish white flowers. Their sepals and petals are long and out-pointing while the lip is broad. The flowers of the Brassavola are very fragrant, allowing them to attract pollinators. They are best grown in baskets or rafts. They enjoy plenty of water when growing.
